Atlas of Great Lakes Indian History (Civilization of the American Indian Series, Vol 174)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Txt) (February, 1987)
Authors: Helen Hornbeck Tanner, Miklos Pinther, and Adele Hast
Average review score:

The only book you need on the subject
Nothing short of a dream come true for a great lakes history or indian history students. I stumbled across this book at a local college library and was hooked. This book is put together in a clear and easy to understand format and would be a jewel in anyone's collection of great lakes or indian history. The illustrations are beautiful and the maps detailing the tribal centers and distribution are numerous, clear and very detailed. Much more than a mere atlas, this work actually seems to TEACH the reader because of the friendly and easy to comprehend writing style. Why various tribes lived where they did, where the came from and where they moved to (forcibly or otherwise), relations between tribes, how they got the names they are commonly known by today, how they lived.....As you read more and more you can actually see why the large groups of Native Americans(because of old animosities, heritage, etc.) did not band together and change history how the Americans and Europens were able to dictate terms over and over as the years went on. Never before have I come across something so complete and accurate on this subject.

Masterful work.
If you enjoy reading pre-Revolutionary history, this book will help you get your bearings. Marvelously crafted.

Beneath the Waves: Exploring the Hidden World of the Kelp Forest
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (August, 1997)
Author: Norbert Wu
Average review score:

Kelp forest are cool
The cover isn't real attractive but ,oh the book is so cool. Well written for the younger audience and for us older folks. The book focuses on the Kelp forest and its inhabitants. The world protected sea otter is featured many times. The pictures fit the text perfect. The book was first printed in 1992 and definitely endures the test of time. In the beginning of the book, Norbert Wu states the purpose of the book: "to help children discover beauty and life in a world they may otherwise not know at all." I'd say he achieved his goal. Kids can read this one alone, in a class setting and again with their parents.

What a beautiful, informative little book!
This slim bit of eye candy gave me a great little introduction to the Kelp Forests! It has wonderful pictures and a great description of the kelp forest ecosystem. It's great for children, too!

Big Moose Lake, New York (Postcard History)
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (20 June, 2000)
Authors: William Scheffler and Frank Carey
Average review score:

What a Great Tour Both Around the Lake and in Time
This book is extremely enjoyable and informative. Not only did I love seeing the history of Big Moose Lake through the wonderful collection of vintage picture post cards, but I couldn't resist comparing each picture to the corresponding snapshots I've taken over the years! It is truly amazing how little has changed geographically in this incredibly scenic area of New York State. Scheffler and Carey, however, also do a great job showing the reader how social factors -- like fashion and entertainment -- have changed in the Adirondacks in the past 100 years. A wonderful tour of photographs that transport the reader around the lake and through time.

A trip back in time
This book will be near and dear to anyone who has visited Big Moose Lake or the Adirondacks.

For the ones who have visited the region before, the book provides a trip back in time and describes how the popular vacation spot got it's start. The best thing about the book and the lake is that not many things have changed since the early 1900's. When reading or just looking at the pictures, travelers are able to take a quick trip around the lake they love whenever they please.

Bonfires & Beacons: Great Lakes Lighthouses
Published in Hardcover by Boston Mills Press (March, 1997)
Authors: Larry Wright and Patricia Wright
Average review score:

Fantastic Easy Quick Read
Larry's photo's are pretty good, but Patricia's writing is very informative and she was nice enough to include a map so you can see exactly where each lighthouse is located. I learned much about maintanence, and I didn't even know there was such a thing as the Huron Lightship. This book is well worth the money.

Absolutely beautiful, full page photographs of lighthouses.
This is a small book that's worth twice its price. Each of the 43 lighthouses gets its own full page photograph. Each facing page has concise, interesting information about the pictured light. A minor flaw is the map of the Great Lakes. Michigan has a strange shape and the Keweenaw Peninsula has become an island. But that is forgiven by the rest of the book. A great plus is the 19 Canadian lighthouses. Up until now all the books I've found only have US lights. The most curious picture of a Michigan light is Sand Hills. Waving high above the lantern room is the Canadian Maple Leaf. Guess that proves that Michigan and Canada are truly good neighbors--as I've always known! Treat yourself to this book if you like lighthouses, out door settings, or good photography.

Buried Treasures of Texas: Legends of Outlaw Loot, Pirate Hoards, Buried Mines, Ingots in Lakes, and Santa Anna's Pack-Train Gold
Published in Paperback by August House Pub (November, 1991)

Average review score:

An intriguing read! 5 STARS!
Texas Treasures is a great book about lost treaure, and adds some history of Texas too. It's an excellent book, and he tells you about where the gold might be located. W.C. Jameson also gives treasure stories about his close calls to where he almost found the treasure. It's organized and a quality print!

Best read in a long time..
Jameson does a great job of making the legends of Texas' buried treasure come alive. His facts and details made me want to grab a shovel and get to work trying to find some of this stuff!! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about Texas or treasure anywhere. Jameson's dry wit made the book enjoyable. I finished it in one night!

By the Lake of Sleeping Children: The Secret Life of the Mexican Border
Published in Paperback by Anchor Books (October, 1996)
Authors: Luis Alberto Urrea and John Lueders-Booth
Average review score:

Shcocking and true
I was scared and upset when I finally realized what the title of the book meant. I am a mexican-american, born on the U.S. side of the border. This book reminded me just how far away America is from Mexico, even though we are neigbors, we are worlds away. This book is blunt. Although it was a harsh reality check for me, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Chilling look at the other side.
We, as United States citizens take for granted all that we have and this book is a solemn reminder of all that we do have to be thankful for. Urrea gives character sketches of sorts on the impoverished families and orphaned children that live unseen by the world in their own world of the Mexican garbage dumps. A very sad tale about the suffering in Mexico that goes unnoticed. Thank you Urrea for opening my eyes and my heart to these children.

Chronicles of Lake George: Journeys in War and Peace
Published in Hardcover by Purple Mountain Pr Ltd (June, 1995)
Author: Russell P. Bellico
Average review score:

This is an absolutely fantastic book.
Chronicles of Lake George is composed of diary entries and historical accounts written by individuals who describe their thoughts on seeing Lake George for the first time. With descriptions from 1749 to 1914, its very interesting historical reading. You'll have a much better understanding of the history of Lake George after reading this book.

The best book on this subject in print.
So significant to American history and yet so little known! The history of the war route known as Lake George and its later role in tourism and conservation as told through eyewitness journals. Full of interesting stories, illustrations and great pictures. You don't need to be a history buff to enjoy this book. Lake George is still a wild and beautiful place and "Chronicles" enhances the lake's mystique for the reader.

Clinical Theology: A Theological and Psychological Basis to Clinical Pastoral Care
Published in Hardcover by Crossroad/Herder & Herder (August, 1987)
Authors: Frank Lake and Martin H. Yeomans
Average review score:

A constructive contribution to Pastoral Counselling
Frank Lake's outstanding treatise about pastoral counselling and psychology is an interdisciplinary project. It combines both pastoral psychology and contemporary psychology/psychoanalysis. Lake's "spiritual research" commences from the christian faith and outlines its importance for the nowadays man and his life within society,in view to broaden a modern understanding of the pastoral ideas of christianity. Lake does not simply work upon the authors' writings of the New Testament, but elaborates them in order to fulfil his in-depth-of-the-topic investigation: that pastoral counselling is line-to-line connected to psychology/psy-choanalysis, for inherits the foundations unto a fruitful scrutinization of the needs and expectations of the modern man, with the perspective to guide him towards psychospiritual elevation and self-realisation.

Clinical Theology is excellent, & still available in Britain
Frank Lake's book is unique. It presents a Christian alternative to Freudian psychoanalysis. Instead of relating psychiatric problems to the sex drive, he relates them to early problems in the mother child relationship, and to trauma produced by those problems. He shows how our relationship with God can replace what was lacking in the Mother child relationship. The book is out of print in the United States, but is still in print in Great Britain. It's worth the trouble of ordering from Britain.

The Colorado River Through Glen Canyon: Before Lake Powell
Published in Paperback by Inskip Ink (01 October, 1995)
Authors: Eleanor Inskip, Glen Canyon Natural History Association, and Treasure Chest Books
Average review score:

A moving documentation of Glen Canyon before Lake Powell.
Glen Canyon before Lake Powell is at once a beautiful and tragic book. It consists of a collection of photographs--mostly color--of the landscape now hidden beneath the eerie turquoise waters of Lake Powell, a vast man-made reservoir on the Colorado River near the Utah-Arizona border. Editor Eleanor Inskip has skillfully paired each photograph with quotations from those who knew Glen Canyon before the water began to rise on that fateful day in January 1963. Explorers, river runners, popular writers, archaeologists, historians, and environmentalists all find a voice in this extraordinary collection, but the work's greatest strength is nevertheless its images.

The book is neither strident nor moralizing in tone. Instead, a sense of quiet grief pervades. The photographs speak for themselves, as do the observations so eloquently captured in the accompanying quotations. In the end, the questions raised are unspoken but obvious: Who are we to decide the fate of an organism so alive and so vital as a river? What have we lost in our relentless quest for the "good life?" And can it in fact be a "good life" with the waters of the Colorado stilled? Inskip respects her readers enough to let them judge for themselves.

Admirers of Eliot Porter's famous The Place No One Knew, now out of print, will find this to be an appropriate companion volume. Very highly recommended.

Moving, well-researched visual & spitual history
Through carefully chosen photographs and comments of people who experienced Glen Canyon before it was inundated by Lake Powell, Inskip presents a moving portrait of sinuous sandstone channels, lush microclimates, and the favorite beaches we will never again view.
